How to Pick Luxury Lighting Fixtures for Your Houston Home

Don’t neglect lighting when designing the interior of your Houston home! It’s easy to forget lighting and treat it as a functional part of your home, but it is so much more than that. Great lighting can set the tone, mood, and ambiance of a space.

As part of the team at Holloway Design Group, I'll be sharing some luxurious lighting options and ideas, along with tips on how to seamlessly incorporate them into your home.

The right lighting fixture will transform your home—the tricky part is knowing what lighting is right for you, your style, and your comfort. That’s why James encouraged me to write this article, to help make your decision easier!

Swinging from the Chandeliers

Chandeliers are never far from mind when people think of luxury lighting, and for good reason—they exude glamor! Chandeliers are perfect for homes with high ceilings and are most often used in entryways, living rooms, and dining areas.

A chandelier is a statement piece; who doesn’t like the idea of a crystal chandelier welcoming guests with a display of light and luxury? If crystal is a little ostentatious, then check out today’s more modern designs, where sleek metal frames with a geometric design offer a contemporary twist on this lighting classic.

Layer Your Lighting

One of the key design principles we follow at Holloway Design Group is layered lighting, where ambient, task, and accent lighting is combined to create warmth and depth to interior lighting.

This requires more than one light fixture since layered lighting is all about the interplay of light. We love starting with recessed lighting and building on this with wall sconces for soft ambient light. Finally, adding task lighting through table lamps finishes the scene.

We also recommend dimmable fixtures so you can adjust the light level by the time of day or even your mood, giving you more control over your environment!

Use Magical Pendant Lighting

Pendant lighting is old-school practicality at its best, perfect for adding some style to your Houston home. We love to use a row of pendant lights in kitchens above islands, creating task lighting with an undeniable sense of style.

Pendant lighting is also a great choice for homes that are aiming for contemporary or industrial vibes. Look for pendant lights in mixed natural materials like metal and glass to add texture and visual interest to your environment while creating a focal point in the room.

Light Up Your Life with Luxury Lamps

Hallways, living rooms, and bathrooms all benefit from the soft ambient lighting provided by a wall sconce. For luxury settings, look for sconces that use high-end materials like brass with intricate detailing.

Don’t forget luxury floor and table lamps, either. Essential for creating the layered lighting we discussed earlier, these fixtures are masters of creating ambiance and bringing light to otherwise naturally dark spaces. Pro tip: look for marble bases, metallic finishes, and hand-blown glass shades for that luxury feel.

Wall sconces and lamps are a great choice for framing your artwork or discreetly highlighting an architectural feature. Add in dimmable bulbs, and you have a lighting fixture that highlights and also creates ambiance.

Let There Be Light Outside!

Houston’s climate makes it a great place to be outdoors any time of the year—don’t neglect it! We love creating an inviting atmosphere with weather-resistant (don’t forget the humidity!) luxury features.

Our favorites this year are oversized lanterns and sleek light fixtures that complement your interior design and extend it outside. Keep the lighting soft for an ambient feel where the interior leads gently out into the gentle Houston night.
