How to Design a Home That Reflects Your Style
Your home is your safe-haven from the world—so why shouldn’t it feel like an extension of you and your unique style? As one of the Houston interior designers at the Holloway Design Group, I see too many people throwing together a bunch of trends, only to regret their decision years later.
It’s not always easy to figure out what your style is, especially when there are so many great ideas on social media. I’ll be showing you how James Holloway and his expert team helps clients like you create a home space that’s truly theirs. Let’s get started!
What’s Your Story?
Before selecting furniture or color palettes, we take the time to understand you. Since your home is where you live, it should tell your story. Where have you lived, what do you love doing, and what are your favorite destinations? The answers to these questions guide our design decisions, and they can guide yours too.
Take a family we recently worked with, who loved Texas Hill country. Their home now features earthy tones and makes use of natural textures like stone and wood. This subtle nod to their passion is also reminiscent of the landscape they love. You can do the same with your home, too! Here’s a detailed view into our series: Mind Behind The Design.
Define Your Aesthetic
Sometimes, defining your style can be tricky (that’s where we come in!). The best way to do this is to think about what you’re drawn to. Modern minimalism? Farmhouse vibes? Neon cyberpunk? If it’s your style, it’s valid!
Many clients worry about mixing styles, but it isn’t necessarily “bad.” We love blending and harmonizing styles, and this isn’t a new concept—that vintage furniture that has been passed down through your family can look good in a minimalist room and works fabulously as a centerpiece. A great design ties everything together, from colors and texture to scale.
Don’t Neglect Comfort
One of the biggest mistakes people make in home interior design is to go all-in on style and forget their own comfort. This isn’t a showroom—it’s your home, folks! Home won’t feel like home unless it’s a place you can really unwind.
At Holloway Design Group, we prioritize comfort while making it a point not to sacrifice style. Our designs maximize comfort with throws and pillows while adding a chic touch for the eyes. Recently, we designed a Houston living room with soft fabrics and a ton of natural light. The result was a serene space where entertaining and unwinding go hand-in-hand.
Pay Attention to the Small Details
The little details in a design are what will bring your home’s personality to life. Think of homes you love. It’s the custom artwork, hand-picked accessories, and other meaningful elements that make a building into a home, and the same is true for you!
We worked with a client who loved vintage books. As you might imagine, this client had an impressive collection that included everything from rare first editions like To Kill a Mockingbird, to leather-bound classics like Great Expectations. We built a custom bookshelf that offered a practical storage solution that also gave him an incredible focal point to show off some of his rarer and more interesting books.
You can do the same with personal touches. Family photos, a cherished hobby, or art that means something to you are all fantastic additions to your interior decor. Let your overall design support personal touches that spark familiarity, coziness, and conversation!
Be a Rulebreaker!
Sometimes, it feels like rules were made to be broken. Design is one of those times. A lot of design rules are just guidance to help people make solid decisions. In reality, your happiness matters the most. Love bold colors and patterns that might make other people recoil? Go for it! Want to live in a neutral, monochromatic space? That’s fine, too!
A successful home design should feel authentic, which means that sometimes, design risks should be taken. Our job is to help you make design risks that feel intentional, rather than like a mistake.
Get Help Creating Your Unique Space!
Design looks easy, but it can be surprisingly difficult (ask any of the interior designers in Houston)! There are a lot of little decisions to make and if you’re busy, it’s not always practical to perfect a design yourself. That’s where we come in. We see home interior design as a collaborative journey where we offer our expertise to guide you to the perfect interior design.
At the same time, we help to make sure the final design matches your vision. Our job is to design a home that feels like a comfortable extension of yourself—a place that tells the story of your life and supports your lifestyle.
